The ABODA Conducting Summer School, Australia’s longest running Conducting School, is an intensive training course held in Melbourne over six days in January. The ABODA 2006 Summer Conducting School will feature Dr Thomas J Fraschillo as the principal clinician. He will be presenting a range of relevant and timely lectures and practical exercises to assist participants to improve and develop their conducting.

This unique course encourages students to develop a solid foundation in conducting essentials, to explore the art and mechanics of conducting, to achieve greater insight into performance techniques aspects of musicianship and a range of band repertoire at a level suited to individual abilities of the participants.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be presented with a certificate of successful participation. All sessions are conducted in a friendly and supportive environment.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The ABODA Conducting Summer School encourages directors of bands and orchestras in schools and the community, current and prospective music educators, university and secondary school students to take part in this wonderful opportunity.

No matter what your experience, the Conducting Summer School has something to offer, catering for a wide range of abilities from beginners to advanced.

Participants registered for conducting tuition will have the opportunity to work with a panel Victoria's finest conductors and music educators, in group and individual sessions with video analysis and a “live” ensemble. Participants will also have the opportunity to conduct pianists in individual sessions with the clinicians in the early afternoon session on days two through four.

Observers can play in the band, attend all sessions, and receive course notes, however, individual tuition and video analysis is available to conducting registrations only.

DATES

In 2006, the school will be run over six days from Sunday January 15 to Saturday January 21. Wednesday January 18 will be a rest day.

VENUE

The venue for the 2006 school is the Balwyn High School Music Centre Buchanan Avenue, North Balwyn (Melway Map 46 C4).This purpose-built music department is superbly appointed and located within easy walking distance of the Doncaster Road Tramline (No. 48), the North Balwyn shopping centre, and features ample parking.

INSTRUMENTS AND THE BAND

Conducting participants and observers should nominate their preferred instruments so that a balanced ensemble can be formed. Teachers are encouraged to register competent students to participate in the band.

PROPOSED DAILY TIMETABLE

9.00 am  Lecture

10.30 Morning tea

11.00 General technique

12.30 pm Lunch

1.30 Individual conducting sessions with piano (conducting registrations only)

3.00 Video conducting sessions (with band)

5.30 Finish

APPLICATIONS

To take advantage of the “Earlybird” prices, ensure that registrations are received before Friday 11 November. A maximum of 27 conducting places only will be available. All registrations must be accompanied by a cheque for the full amount specified. No registration will be considered complete without full payment. Please make cheques payable to ABODA.

* Non-ABODA registrations include ABODA membership for one calendar year.
